If someone asks me about a place that truly combines adventure, raw nature and authentic culture, I don’t hesitate: the Pacuare River in Costa Rica. Considered one of the most beautiful rivers in the world for rafting, the Pacuare flows from the Talamanca Mountains to the Caribbean lowlands, offering an experience that not only excites, but transforms.
The Pacuare River is in the central region of Costa Rica. It rises in the Talamanca Mountain Range and flows east to the Caribbean coast. About three hours by road from San José, the closest town is Turrialba, famous for its coffee, volcano and adventure sports. Many tours include transportation from San José, Arenal or Puerto Viejo, so access is never a problem.
National Geographic recognizes it as one of the best rafting rivers in the world. Class III and IV rapids are intense yet manageable, suitable for both beginners (with certified guides) and experts.
What impressed me most was the scenery: towering cliffs, waterfalls plunging into the river, suspension bridges, and dense rainforest on both sides. It feels like being inside a nature documentary, only with adrenaline running high.
The Pacuare runs through one of Costa Rica’s richest biological corridors. Along a single stretch you can see toucans, oropendolas, sloths and even hear stories of jaguars in higher ranges. If you’re passionate about birdwatching in Costa Rica, this is paradise: species such as the Sunbittern, Scarlet Macaw and Montezuma Oropendola are commonly spotted.
What gives the experience true depth is the encounter with the Cabécar Indigenous community, one of the oldest in Costa Rica. On hikes through secondary forest, you can visit their villages, learn about traditional medicine, cacao preparation and their way of life. This is not staged tourism – it’s a respectful, genuine approach to a living culture.
The Pacuare can be visited year-round:
Dry Season (December–April): clear skies, calmer rapids, ideal for beginners and families.
Green Season (May–November): stronger rapids, lush landscapes, perfect for thrill-seekers.
I visited during the green season: rain was constant, but the scenery was alive and the adventure unmatched.
Choose half-day, full-day or multi-day expeditions. Multi-day trips include overnight stays at eco-lodges along the river, surrounded by jungle sounds. Safety is excellent: certified guides, helmets, life jackets and full instruction.
